Small Resolutions of Closures of K-Orbits in Flag Varieties Scott Larson, OSU This thesis defense will be presented over zoom. If you would like to 'attend' this presentation on zoom, please email slarson at math.okstate.edu and the link will be provided.
Abstract: Singularities of closures of K-orbits in the flag variety play an important role in the representation theory of real reductive Lie groups. Resolutions of singularities provide a tool for studying the singularities; the notion of smallness for a resolution is particularly important. This lecture will briefly describe what resolutions can tell us. Then some general methods of construction of resolutions of K-orbit closures will be discussed and the constructions of a several families of small resolutions of singularities for K-orbit closures will be described.
