Abstract: In this talk, I hope to contrast several fictitious teachers and their conceptions of the features
associated with being a competent mathematics instructor. Specifically, I will focus on the importance of
attending to and supporting the academic success skills identified during a summer workshop by
participants involved in the Mathematical Inquiry Project (MIP). I hope to generate a conversation
centered around these affective components by sharing insights as well as learning from other
instructors’ experiences.
