Abstract: In the first part of this talk, I will explain why studying free resolutions of squarefree monomial ideals gives information about the free resolution of every ideal in a polynomial ring.
In the second part, I will explain how knowing a free resolution for an ideal $I$ allows us to understand the algebraic structure of the Rees algebra $R(I)$, an important ring constructed by considering all powers of $I$.
