Abstract: Work of several authors including Varbaro, Mihn-Trung, and Terai-Trung in the previous decade gave characterizations as to when the symbolic or ordinary powers of a squarefree monomial ideal are Cohen-Macaulay. Their work provides a somewhat unexpected link between deep areas of research in commutative algebra and algebraic combinatorics, but their proofs are long, technical, and leave an air of mystery around certain aspects. In this talk, we will discuss a new method that allows us to recover and strengthen these results, while simultaneously providing greatly simplified proofs. Our work also sheds some light on certain quirks in these characterizations. This talk is based on joint work with Paolo Mantero.
