Abstract: We characterize meanings and purposes for quantification invoked by students while proving a theorem in functional analysis. We call these operationalizations of quantification "quantops" and present a framework based on student reasoning while interpreting statements and writing proofs. Each quantop flexibly appeared in forms that seemingly strategically foregrounded or backgrounded the quantification in different contexts to focus problem-solving on portions of a statement relevant in the moment.
