Abstract: The Rees algebra of an ideal is a useful algebraic tool which collects information on the powers of the given ideal. In this talk, I will describe how it can be used to study singularities of algebraic varieties or to understand the combinatorial properties of convex sets. I will then briefly introduce Rees algebras of modules, and survey recently developed techniques to study them.
The talk will be of expository nature and suitable to a graduate student audience.
