Abstract: I will give an introduction to how (canonical) heights can be written in potential theoretic terms as sums of mutual energy pairings. I will then introduce the Arakelov-Zhang pairing in rational dynamics, which provides a quantitative measure of how far apart the dynamics of two rational maps are. Finally, I will present a new proof of a theorem of Zhang that gives a lower bound on the sums of heights for two rational maps.
