Abstract: I will review the epistemological foundations of the intellectual need—a theoretical construct within Guershon Harel’s conceptual framework, DNR-Based Instruction in Mathematics. I will then propose a qualitative methodology for investigating students’ experience of intellectual need in both clinical and classroom contexts.
