Abstract: I discuss the empirical research that has contributed to my development of a theoretical framework for pedagogical content knowledge (PCK). I begin by providing a broad overview of the history of scholarship on teacher’s subject-matter knowledge. I then present my theory and discuss its dependence on key aspects of Piaget’s genetic epistemology. I conclude by identifying future research opportunities in this developing area of mathematics education.
