Abstract: Typically introduced in introduction-to-proof courses, equivalence relations are a cornerstone of many concepts in higher mathematics. However, despite their centrality, student thinking about equivalence relations, and in particular productive student thinking about equivalence relations remains understudied. I will summarize some of the existing literature on productive student reasoning about equivalence relations and provide a few illustrative examples of graduate students' productive reasoning about equivalence relations from task based clinical interviews that I conducted recently, demonstrating both local and global views of equivalence relations, as well as a flexibility transitioning between the two.
