Abstract: This talk concerns Abelian varieties and curves in characteristic p. The classical Schottky problem, which is open in general, asks which Abelian varieties are isomorphic to the Jacobian of a (smooth) curve. In characteristic p, there is a rich extra ingredient available: the p-torsion group scheme. The so-called Ekedahl-Oort stratification partitions Abelian varieties based on their p-torsion group scheme. In this talk, we address an analogue of the Schottky problem: "which Ekedahl-Oort strata contain the Jacobian of a (smooth) curve?" In particular, we investigate possible p-torsion group schemes of Artin-Schreier covers.
