Mathematics Education Seminar 3:00 PM MSCS 114 | | Undergraduate Pre-service Teachers’ Understandings of Volume of Complex Shaped Solids Callista Skillings, Oklahoma State University
| | | Abstract: This talk will discuss the work I did in Spring 2026 as part of the Qualitative Research I course I completed. For this course, I decided to explore Undergraduate Pre-service Teachers' Understandings of Volume of Complex Shaped solids. My research question for this study was: How do undergraduate pre-service teachers understand the volume of complex shaped solids? My study collected data using the methods of peripheral membership observation, written artifacts, and task-based semi-structured interviews (Bhattacharya, 2017,p.140; Tracy, 2025,p.87; Golden, 2000; Clement, 2000; Bhattacharya, 2017,p.127). My project is guided by constructionist epistemology and is rooted in the interpretative paradigm (Tracy, 2025,p.57). Additionally, my project is a case study (Tracy, 2025, p.68) where the boundary of the case is undergraduate PSTs at Oklahoma State University taking the MATH 3403 course in spring 2026. Ball et al.’s Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching (MKT) framework provided me with a lens with which to conduct my project (Ball et al., 2008). My presentation will briefly discuss these different aspects of my study and showcase some preliminary focused codes, categories, and themes from the collected data. |
