Abstract: I will talk about a technique for computing the Betti numbers of a monomial ideal by splitting it into smaller ideals. This particular approach has been around at least since Eliahou and Kervaire's 1990 paper, but it has gotten new life in recent years. I will mention a few different perspectives on the method coming from combinatorics and algebra.
