Bridging the Gap between being a Student and being a Teacher: The Role of Elementary-Education Mathematics Courses
Wendy James, University of Central Oklahoma
[Abstract] [PDF]
Abstract: Early Childhood and Elementary Education programs typically require students to revisit elementary-school mathematics for the purpose of filling any gaps in their learning and enriching their depth of understanding in and across concepts.  Going beyond developmental courses, which parallel many of the same concepts and skills, these courses provide opportunities to explore seemingly simple concepts in much greater depth.  Until these courses, the students’ knowledge is based on their own early schooling, which typically focused on computational skills, not understanding.  If we assume teachers cannot teach well what they do not understand, then these courses designed for the future teacher should be organized around the answers to the following questions:

· What math concepts and skills are important in the elementary grades?

· What do teachers need to understand to teach these concepts and skills well?

· What ideas can we take from research about teaching and learning to improve our current practices?

The colloquium will address these questions across a few selected topics within number and operations, geometry, and measurement.  In addition, I will share my experiences of the rewards and challenges of teaching Early Childhood and Elementary Education majors for the past 15 years, and cast a vision for how the OSU math departments could best serve this valuable subpopulation.
