2022 OSU high school math day

Dear Math Coordinators, I am writing to remind you of the 2022 OSU High School Math Day, which is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, October 4, 2022. Please share this information with your high school's academic coach, interested faculty members, and students. As a reminder, the math day consists of a 75-minute multiple-choice contest, followed by breakout sessions featuring presentations by OSU faculty, a low-intensity team competition, and activities organized by OSU's undergraduate math club. The contest is a challenging exam which emphasizes creativity, logic and problem solving skills. All juniors and seniors with an interest in mathematics are highly encouraged to participate. Students in earlier grades who have a strong background and aptitude for mathematics are also eligible, and are welcome to join the event. The day will begin with the contest, held in the Student Union Ballroom on OSU's Stillwater Campus on Tuesday, October 4, 2022, from 1:00 p.m. to approximately 2:15 p.m. The student union is on the south end of our Stillwater campus; the ballroom is on the second floor. After the contest, we'll have two rounds of breakout sessions, tentatively including presentations by OSU faculty, a team competition, and a problem-solving activity run by OSU's undergraduate math club, and then a brief awards ceremony. The day should conclude between 4:00 and 4:30. To ensure that we have enough space, we are asking that all participants be registered by September 23, 2022. The registration form is available online at <https://math.okstate.edu/people/mermin/hsc/>. Please mail or fax a completed form by this deadline. The most recent exam, solutions, and related material may be found on the website <https://math.okstate.edu/people/mermin/hsc/2018.html>. We normally request a materials fee of 5 dollars per student, payable in advance or on the day of the exam. This year, for students taking the contest at our Stillwater location only, we are able to waive the materials fee. 2021 OSU Math Day: cancelled

Dear Math coordinators, I write, sadly, to announce the cancellation of OSU's 2021 Math Day, which had been scheduled for October 5. Given the continuing progress of the pandemic, we cannot justify the risk of bringing students to our campus. We will try again next fall, when I hope to see many of your students, safely, in Stillwater. In the meantime, if there is sufficient interest, we might try serializing this year's competition. We would send you five problems every six weeks or so, with the idea that you could administer them to interested students during lunch or at some other convenient time. Then we would collate results and announce winners late in the spring semester. If this sounds like something you'd like to do, please write to us at hsc(a)math.okstate.edu. 2020 OSU math contest cancelled

Dear Math Coordinators, I write with the sad news that this fall's OSU math competition has been cancelled by the coronavirus. We will try again next fall when, we hope, it will once again be safe for people to gather together indoors. Next year's event is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, October 5, 2021, and I look forward to seeing many of you and your students at that time. In the interim, please stay safe. OSU Math Contest cancelled

Dear Math Coordinators, I am writing with sincere regret to announce the cancellation of this year's OSU High School Math Day, and the associated competition. The spread of the coronavirus is making it clear that it would be irresponsible to ask students to come together, even with only their classmates and teachers, to take the competition this spring. I hope you and your students will stay safe over the coming months, and look forward to seeing many of you on OSU's campus in the future. We continue to hope that next fall's Math Day, scheduled for Wednesday, October 7, will take place as scheduled. OSU Math Day: coronavirus update

Dear Math Coordinators, I am writing to remind you of the rescheduled 2019 OSU High School Math Day, which is scheduled to take place on Monday, April 13, 2020, and to update you about our planning with regard to the coronavirus. Please share this information with your high school's academic coach, interested faculty members, and students. OSU's administration is monitoring the coronavirus situation closely, and will act in the best interests of OSU's students, faculty, and prospective future students. So: (1) If OSU is open as normal on April 13, we will hold the math day as scheduled on campus. However, if any schools or students are unable or unwilling to travel due to the coronavirus, we will allow you to take the individual competition at your school, just as we already do for schools more than 150 miles from Stillwater. (If you wish to take advantage of this option, please fill out the Remote Site Registration Form here: http://math.okstate.edu/people/mermin/hsc/remote_testing_hsc2019.pdf) (2) If OSU closes campus, cancels in-person classes, or moves to significantly restrict employee domestic travel during any part of April, we will cancel the on-campus part of the Math Day. In this case, we will mail copies of the competition to all registered schools, so that you can take it on your campus. (While I was composing this message, OSU announced significant restrictions to employee travel, effective immediately. If those restrictions are still in effect on April 1, I will announce the cancellation of our on-campus events at that time.) (3) If the virus makes it impossible for your students to take the competition on the afternoon of April 13, we ask that you honor the spirit of the rules (students should get 75 minutes without calculators or similar tools, should not have had access to the questions beforehand, and should refrain from discussing them on the internet for at least a few days afterwards) while getting the timing as close as you safely can. OSU Math Day rescheduled: April 13

Dear math coordinators, I recently learned that this year's OSU Math Day had been scheduled for a day that almost every school in Oklahoma is using for fall break. I apologize for the error, and thank those of you that brought it to my attention. We want as many students as possible to be able to participate in this event, so we have rescheduled the Math Day for Monday, April 13, 2020. This was the best we could do once we became aware of the error; we hope to see many of your students in April. The new date is now reflected on the Math Day website, http://math.okstate.edu/people/mermin/hsc/ and there should be an announcement soon in the mail. As in previous years, the day will consist of an individual competition, followed by a low-intensity team round and several public lectures by OSU faculty that we hope will be of broad interest. The day will begin with the contest, held in the Student Union Ballroom on OSU's Stillwater Campus on Thursday, October 8, 2015, from 1:00 p.m. to approximately 2:15 p.m. This is the same location as last year, and represents a change from previous years. The student union is on the south end of our Stillwater campus; the ballroom is on the second floor. After the contest, we'll have two rounds of breakout sessions, tentatively including presentations by OSU faculty, a team competition, and a problem-solving activity run by OSU's undergraduate math club, and then a brief awards ceremony. The day should conclude between 4:00 and 4:30. Unlike the last several years, we are not holding a long-form team round as a second half of the contest. We recognize and regret that this will make the event less attractive to some of our elite competitors, but it was not working for too many of the attending students. However, I would like to measure interest in continuing that long-answer competition in future years. So, if you have students who would likely be interested in competing in such a contest with extremely difficult open-ended questions, either as part of a weekend event in Stillwater or on high school campuses, please tell me.
