Dear Math Coordinators,
I am writing to inform you of the 2011 OSU High School Math Contest. Please share this information with your high school's academic coach, interested faculty members, and students. This contest is a challenging exam which emphasizes creativity, logic and problem solving skills. All juniors and seniors with an interest in mathematics are highly encouraged to participate. Students in earlier grades who have a strong background and aptitude for mathematics are also eligible, and are welcome to join the event.
The contest will be held in the Wes Watkins Center on OSU's Stillwater Campus on Tuesday, October 4, 2011, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. To ensure that we have enough space, we are asking that all participants be registered by September 23, 2011. The registration form is available online at http://www.math.okstate.edu/hsc2011. Please mail or fax a completed form by this deadline.
As in previous years, the contest will consist of a 75-minute multiple choice round, followed by a 90-minute round consisting of longer questions on which students will be asked to explain their reasoning. However, in a departure from previous years, the second round will be a team round: students will work together in groups of four, and teams will submit jointly written solutions.
We realize that the number of students from most schools will not be divisible by four. We will do our best to match up groups of complementary size to make full-sized teams. However, we ask that schools bringing more than four students partition their delegations ahead of time.
Last year's contest, solutions, and related material may be found on the website http://www.math.okstate.edu/hsc2010.
We request a materials fee of 5 dollars per student, payable in advance or on the day of the exam. Please contact us if you need financial aid. Out of state entrants more than 150 miles from Stillwater should also contact us. Off-site testing is possible. All other information including an announcement, parking instructions, and a campus map are available on the contest website http://www.math.okstate.edu/hsc2011.
If you have questions about the contest, please contact me or Shelly Downing at hsc@math.okstate.edu or at (405) 744-5688. For other questions about OSU, you may also contact the Office of High School and College Relations at 1-800-852-1255 if you are outside the state of Oklahoma, or 1-800-233-5019 Ext. 3 if you are within the state.
I look forward to seeing you and your students on the OSU Stillwater Campus for the contest.
Sincerely,
Jeff Mermin
Dear Math Coordinators,
I am writing to ask for your help in preparing for Oklahoma State's high school math contest, coming up on October 4.
Our registration deadline is not until September 23, but the Wes Watkins Center, which is the building hosting the contest, has just asked us for a size estimate by tomorrow. Thus, I'd like to attempt an approximate census.
If you've already registered, thank you! If you haven't registered yet, but think you might bring students to Stillwater, and are in a position where it's possible to do so, please send a (rough) guess about the size of your delegation to either hsc@math.okstate.edu or mermin@math.okstate.edu .
As always, many thanks for your interest!
Information about the contest can be found at our website, http://www.math.okstate.edu/hsc2011 .
A copy of the invitation sent out in early August follows.
