Hi: There is a math colloquium today in the Distinguished Women in Mathematics Series today at 3:30PM in MSCS 101. Refreshments at 4:30 in the department common room. The speaker is Jennifer Hom, from Georgia Institute of Technology: Title: Unknotting number and satellites Abstract below. Please come join us. Sincerely, David Wright Abstract: The unknotting number of a knot is the minimum number of crossing changes needed to untie the knot. It is one of the simplest knot invariants to define, yet remains notoriously difficult to compute. We will survey some basic knot theory invariants and constructions, including the satellite knot construction, a straightforward way to build new families of knots. We will give a lower bound on the unknotting number of certain satellites using knot Floer homology. This is joint work with Tye Lidman and JungHwan Park.

Hello everyone, The mathematics department will be hosting Jennifer Hom as our Distinguished Women in Mathematics Colloquium speaker. A full announcement on that will be sent out on Monday. In preparation for her visit, our own Jonathan Johnson will be giving a warm-up talk at 3:30 pm in MSCS 114 today: Title: Unknotting Numbers and Knot Floer Homology Abstract: The unknotting number is a very natural and classical invariant of a knot. Despite this, this invariant is not well understood. For example, it is an open question how unknotting numbers behave under basic knot operations such as the connect sum and satellite operations. Floer homology has provide a suite of new invariants for 3-maifolds which has provided new techniques to study classical problems in knot theory. In preparation for next week's colloquium talk by Jennifer Hom, we will define knot Floer homology and discuss how it has been used to study unknotting numbers. Hello everyone, This week we have Jennifer Hom (Georgia Institute of Technology) visiting the department as part of the Distinguished Women in Mathematics Colloquium Series. There will be a lunch and panel discussion at 12:30 on Wednesday in MSCS 523. Please RSVP by tomorrow at 1pm, if you are interested in coming. Association for Women in Mathematics - OSU chapter elections

Hello math majors, The Oklahoma State Chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics wanted to let you know about two events coming up in the next few weeks. First, we will be holding our first meeting of the 2023 calendar year next Wednesday February 15 at 3:30pm in room MSCS 115. The first part of the meeting will be a meet and greet with snacks and games, followed at 4pm by our elections for the 2023 cohort of officers for the 2023 calendar year. There are four officer positions up for election: 1. President - the chief executive officer of the chapter 2. Vice-president - who fills in for the president and helps lead the chapter. 3. Secretary - who in charge of recruiting and promotion 4. Treasurer - who is responsible for the chapter's finances. The following week, on Wednesday February 22 at 1:30pm, we will have a lunch and panel discussion with the spring 2023 Distinguished Women in Mathematics Colloquium speaker, Jennifer Hom, Georgia Insitute of Technology also at 3:30pm in room MSCS 445. If you are interested in joining us for that please respond to this email. We hope to see you at one or both events!
