Dear friends:
The Putnam competition is an undergraduate math problem solving competition that has been held every year since 1938. It consists of 12 extremely challenging problems prepared by a rotating committee of mathematicians. Solving any one is an excellent result. Solving more than one is usually exceptional.
I am starting up the Putnam information and practice seminar again this fall, ahich anyone is welcome to attend any time. It will be Tuesdays from 5 to 6 PM. The schedule in the math department is pretty tight this fall, and so I am sorry that this is the only time we can run this seminar. The actual competition is on Saturday December 6, so it is a little bit of a pain that finals being on Dec. 8, but there you go.
It is not strictly necessary, but if you think you might participate in the competition this year, please let me know.
I will be putting somemore information up on the website www.math.okstate.edu
Best wishes, Dave Wright MS 527, x4-5775.
