Dear tenure track faculty,
The undergraduate committee is bringing a matter to your attention for a quick vote. This matter is causing a delay in the submission of our 2019 undergraduate degrees to the State Regents for Higher Education and must be addressed quickly.
THE ISSUE: Math 4423, Geometry and Algorithms in Three-Dimensional Modeling, is Henry's 3D printing course. This course lists a choice of CS 1113 (Java) or ENGR 1412 (VBA) as prerequisite computer programming courses. The faculty recently approved adding CS 1103 (Python) as an option for our majors to meet the computer programming requirement. The issue is that math majors who take CS 1103 instead of CS 1113 or ENGR 1412 would then not have met the prerequisite for MATH 4423, should they wish to take it.
THE FIX: The Undergraduate Committee (Mantini [chair], Mermin, Oehrtman, Rusin, Segerman) presents a motion to the faculty that we rewrite the prerequisite for MATH 4423 to allow a choice of all three programming couxrses (CS 1103 or CS 1113 or ENGR 1412), in order to allow all three courses to meet the computer programming prerequisite. Note that we ran this question by the course instructor (Segerman), who feels that the Python course may, in fact, be a better prerequisite than the Java course in this case.
QUESTIONS: You may address questions to any member of the undergraduate committee.
VOTE: Please email YES, in favor of the motion, or NO, for a vote against, to Mary Johnston by 5:00 PM on Friday, February 15.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE!!
