Dear colleagues,
Today I received information from the Dean's office about sabbatical applications for 2020-2021. I've attached the discussion from the Faculty Handbook, the sabbatical application information and instructions, and the application form itself. Our internal deadline will be Monday, October 28, to enable me to write letters of support for all our applicants and to rank the proposals. Please turn in your applications to Mary by then (and earlier if you finish before then).
Please note that the Department can generally support full-year sabbatical applications and spring sabbatical applications. For full-year sabbaticals, the Department can use some of the released salary funds to cover fall teaching needs. For spring sabbaticals, the Department gets no compensation, but our teaching load is lower in the spring, so it is usually not a problem. Fall sabbaticals are more difficult because we get no funding, and our teaching needs are much greater in the fall. If you feel that you need to take a fall sabbatical, please talk it over with me. It is not impossible to do, particularly if there are good professional or personal reasons for it, but I will need some good arguments to make to the Dean's office.
Best wishes,
Chris
