Fast feedback requested: Possible third position

Dear colleagues, (I apologize for the quick timeline and the fact that many are traveling, but I would appreciate responses on this, both positive and negative, sent to Leticia and me by Monday if at all possible in case we decide to move forward.) A number of you have expressed to me concerns about diversity in job searches in mathematics. A commitment to hiring candidates who will help us serve members of underrepresented groups is a top priority of the College as well. When Leticia and I met with Associate Dean Belmonte for her approval of our slate of candidates, we also discussed diversity issues with her and noted that we had identified some very strong candidates outside of our areas of urgent need, numerical analysis/computational PDE and analysis. We noted that we wished we had a third line open given the strength of the candidates. Associate Dean Belmonte suggested that we make a case for a third position on loan against a future retirement, and I wrote on Wednesday to make such a case. Leticia and I had looked carefully at all candidates suggested by the faculty, and we decided to present the two candidates we thought were extremely strong mathematically, were outstanding teachers, and in addition had demonstrated a commitment to diversity: Eloísa Grifo (commutative algebra) and Carmen Rovi (topology). The Dean's office was very enthusiastic about these candidates and today offered us an additional position as a loan to try to hire one of these two. I am asking for your feedback on this possibility. I am strongly inclined to accept this offer for reasons beyond diversity considerations; namely, I think it is best to grab a position when we can and not gamble on getting permission to fill it later. We will have a new Dean next year, and we have no idea what her or his priorities will be. Additionally, the state budget situation has continued to deteriorate significantly, and gas and oil prices are very low right now, which will have an effect in the coming years. Candidate interviews

Dear colleagues, Yesterday Leticia and I met with Associate Dean Laura Belmonte to discuss our search process and obtain permission to interview. The search committee did an excellent job screening candidates, and we will have six strong candidates on campus in late January and February. I am currently working with the candidates on scheduling. For the Wang line, with a preference for numerical analysis/computational PDE, we will interview: Deniz Bilman (postdoc at University of Michigan, Ph.D. from UIC--still waiting on confirmation from him) Yakov "Yasha" Berchenko-Kogan (postdoc at Washington University in St. Louis, Ph.D. from MIT) Xu Zhang (Assistant Professor at Mississippi State, postdoc at Purdue, Ph.D. from Virginia Tech) The Gallagher line was open to any area of math, but we focused primarily on analysis because of our departmental need in that area. We narrowed the short list to candidates in complex analysis and in PDE. Based both on faculty feedback and my own assessment of our needs, I decided that we should interview three candidates in complex analysis. The candidates in both areas were very strong, and it was hard to differentiate among them. We will interview: Sean Curry (postdoc at UC-San Diego, Ph.D. from the University of Auckland) Luke Edholm (postdoc at Michigan, Ph.D. from Ohio State) Vyron Vellis (postdoc at UConn, Ph.D. from the University of Illinois (Urbana)) I appreciate the work everyone has done so far in evaluating and providing feedback on files, and I hope we have great participation in the forthcoming interviews. Call for applications for the Vaughn Professorship

Dear colleagues, We have a vacancy in the Vaughn Professorship in Number Theory since Anthony Kable decided not to continue in this position. Professor Rob Burnap, Vaughn O. Vennerberg Chair of Bioinformatics and Molecular Genetics, is the outside chair of the search committee, which consists of Professor Burnap and our Personnel Committee. I have attached their call for applications from full Professors in our department and the document on the Professorship that the Department approved in 2003. Let me remind you that the deadline for early voting with regard to the list of finalists is 3:00 tomorrow afternoon, with the meeting scheduled for 3:30 in MSCS 514. A&S FY18 Spring Travel Program

Dear colleagues, Attached is some information about the A&S FY18 Spring Travel Program. This program supports research and research-related travel by providing grants up to $500 for travel in Oklahoma and contiguous states and up to $1,000 for travel outside the region. If you intend to apply for departmental travel funds for research-related travel this spring, please also apply for A&S funding as well. We will generally prioritize those who apply for the A&S funding over those who do not. Please give me your proposal electronically as a single file by Tuesday, October 3.
