Hello everyone,
Tomorrow we will have topology seminar at 3:00 pm in the 405/423 classroom. The title and abstract are below:
Title: A local to global argument on low dimensional manifolds
Speaker: Sam Nariman, Northwestern
Date: Nov 28, 2017
Time: 3:00 PM
Room: MSCS 423
Abstract: We describe a local to global method by cutting a manifold into simpler pieces in a ”contractible spaces of choices”. In doing so, we give a simpler approach to Thurston’s theorem on homeomorphisms, Cerf’s theorem on comparing diffeomorphisms and homeomorphisms of three manifolds. If time permits I will describe how this approach could possibly give a different proof of Smale’s conjecture (Gabai’s theorem) for hyperbolic 3 manifold M which says that the group Isom(M) is homotopy equivalent to Diff(M). (Note the special day.)

Hello everyone,
Henry will be speaking today in seminar. His title and abstract are below:
>From veering triangulations to pseudo-Anosov flows
Speaker: Henry Segerman, OSU
Date: Nov 8, 2017
Time: 3:30 PM
Room: MSCS 509
Abstract: Agol introduced veering triangulations of mapping tori, whose combinatorics are canonically associated to the pseudo-Anosov monodromy. Guéritaud and Agol generalised an alternative construction to any closed manifold equipped with a pseudo-Anosov flow without perfect fits. We prove the converse, showing that veering triangulations are a perfect combinatorialisation of such flows.

Hello everyone,
If you are planning on going to redbud, fill out the travel authorization form and email it to Matt Clay <mattclay(a)uark.edu>. Here are instructions about the vendor ID form.

If you want a per diem or mileage reimbursement, fill out the form.
Also, Henry is driving out in his car to redbud. We have two other passengers in that car. Robert and Henry you guys are speaking so let me know which one of you is driving. Anyone else who plans on going let me know when you send in the form.
Best,
Neil

Hi Neil,
I attached the travel authorization form, please forward to folks at OSU planning to go to Redbud. We will definitely pay mileage and might be able to pay per diem, we’ll have to see how far the funds strecth. Drivers should complete the form and if non-drivers want the possibility of per diem, they should complete too. Have OSU participants email this back to me quickly.
If they participated in the Spring Redbud at UArk, we should have their vendor id form on file and there is no need to send another. Else, or if they moved, they will need to complete this form as well. If they are only updating an address, they can skip the SSN.
People can emial me with questions.
Also, I’m glad to see that you are visiting here in a couple of weeks. I put your title/abstract online. Let me know if it looks wrong:

Hi Matt,
I think we are probably going to drive out for one day. I will try to pin down a list of cars, but probably 2 or 3 are going out.
Best,
Neil

Hi Neil,
Do you know how many cars you’ll be taking down to Norman for the fall redbud? Are you all planning on making it a one day deal or is anyone planning to stay overnight?
Best Regards,
Matt
