Title: Obtaining topological information from knot diagrams

Abstract: Knots and links are most easily visualized via a projection diagram.  However, obtaining topological and geometric information from such a presentation has proven to be difficult. In this talk I will discuss conditions on the diagram that allow us to show that any closed essential surface in the knot complement has high genus. This is joint work with Ryan Blair and David Futer.
