Abstract: We will show a sharp bound on the genus of a normal surface in a triangulated compact 3-manifold in terms of its normal quadrilaterals. We apply this to determining the complexity of certain infinite families of compact 3-manifolds.

We will demonstrate the construction of inflations of an ideal triangulation of the interior of a compact three manifold via examples. Several applications of inflations to constructions of efficient triangulations and Dehn fillings will be given.
