Minutes for Meeting of the Graduate Committee November 10, 1998

Issues discussed:

• Revised Handbook (short and long versions)
  New versions of the brief and long versions of the handbook have been written and are now available on the web pages.
• Planning for OSU Graduate Math Weekend (aka Mathfest)
  The dates were set as February 12 and 13, 1998. Progress on obtaining speakers and making other arrangements was reviewed.
• Update on some students
• Placement Exam
  The problem of placement of new graduate students into courses at an appropriate level was discussed. A suggestion was made that a placement exam could be used for this purpose. The possibilities for the content of the exam and administration of it were also considered.
• Ph.D. Exam system
  The length of time between first enrollment and taking of exams by most students was discussed. It was agreed to gather some informations on exam requirements at other similar institutions.
