Minutes of the Meeting of the Graduate Committee September 2, 1997

Issues discussed:

• What courses, if any, should be offered at a time convenient for non-traditional students?

  There was a lengthy discussion of how to determine what to do. Information will be gathered from faculty, graduate students, and other departments that may be dealing with similar problems.

• Foreign language requirement specifications

  It was decided to add a description of the length of the passage and the time allowed to the handbook description of the Ph.D. Language Exam. These are yet to be fixed. The other variants listed and oral exams were also discussed but no other changes received sufficient support. The length and time will be discussed at the next meeting.

Discussion of the remaining item and updates was postponed until the next meeting.

• Adding the requirements for no more than x hours of topics courses, seminar, thesis to the Plan of Study requirements in addition to or instead of the catalog.

• Handbook update: web, printed and email versions.
• Redesign of pamphlet.
• Plaques for Jobe and Scroggs award.
• Ed.D. to Ph.D. conversion.
