Exam Procedures for Numerical Analysis

(Adopted February 25, 2000.)

Numerical Analysis Exams are conducted in a computer equiped room, such as the computer classroom. Students are permitted to use the computer algebra systems installed locally on the machines (such as MAPLE, DERIVE, MATHEMATICA) for carrying out calculations. Students will be given the opportunity to use these machines at selected times in the weeks preceding the exams. The titles and version numbers of the software available for use during an exam will be announced at least three months prior to the exam.

Unless intermediate calculations are specifically requested in the statement of an exam problem candidates need only copy the results from fully executed programs they may write to the blue books. Programs and/or worksheets can be saved to a blank diskette prelabeled with the candidate's ID by the Graduated Committee or to the hard drive during the exam as a precaution against computer failures. At the conclusion of the exam the students will be given the opportunity to print out the programs or worksheets. The exam proctor will bundle the printouts and diskettes with the blue books. The blue book is considered to be the student's exam paper. The printouts may be consulted by the exam committee to help determine partial credit. The diskettes will serve as backup in case there are problems with printing.
