Math Modeling Contest

Dear all, The Math Modeling Contest is around the corner! The contest is a four-day event in which three-person teams write papers using math to address real-world problems. Recent contests have had questions about traffic flow, cell phones, global warming, and sudoku. Last year, almost 1700 teams participated from universities all over the world. A team from OSU was one of 300 to receive the second-best possible score, "Meritorious", for their paper modeling traffic circles. The nine teams with higher scores had their papers published in the journal "Undergraduate Mathematics and its Applications". This year's contest begins at 7:00 pm on February 18 and ends at 7:00 pm on February 22. If you can spare that weekend, it's an exciting event and a great way to represent the university. If you'd like to participate, please tell me by February 15 so that I can register the correct number of teams. Scholarship application

The Mathematics Department has scholarships available for freshmen through seniors. These are available to students who have declared either a first or second major in mathematics. (Any mathematics advisor can assist you in declaring a mathematics major.) A graduation/retention GPA of 3.25 and a math GPA of 3.5 is required. Complete the attached application form and return it to the Department of Mathematics MSCS 401 by March 1, 2010. I will be happy to assist you if you have questions. Benny Evans

Summer research opportunities

Greetings to all of our math majors. It is not too early to begin thinking about summer research opportunities. A list of available sites can be found at http://www.ams.org/employment/reu.html These programs are typically 4 to 6 weeks of intensive mathematics study. Most are aimed at mathematics students who are completing their junior year. Applications are competitive, and financial support is usually part of the acceptance package. These research programs provide outstanding educational opportunities. Participation also looks very good on job and graduate school applications. I participated in one of these programs at Clemson University between my own junior and senior years and found the program to be quite rewarding. I met a much younger Alan Adolphson at the Clemson program. I would be happy to speak with any of you regarding these opportunities. Benny Evans Director of Undergraduate Studies

This is a reminder that if you checked out a Calculator from the Math. Dept. for the Summer 09 Semester it must be returned by 12:00 NOON Monday, August, 03^rd . If returned after 12:00 NOON Monday, August 3^rd , late fees will be applied to your Bursar account depending on day calculator is returned to 401 Math Sciences. Starting on Thursday, August, 6^th , calculator will not be returnable and your Bursar account will be billed FULL PRICE of the calculator and you will own the calculator. Calculator Check Out June 9th, 2009

For those enrolled in a OSU Math prefix class during the Summer 2009 Semester, the OSU Math Department will offer Calculators for checkout. Checkout begins: Tues, June9th and Wed. June 10th from 9:00am-11:30am and 1:00pm -4:00pm. Starting Thursday June11th, normal check-out hours 8:00 -12:00 and 1:00- 5:00 (Monday through Friday). Check-out will be in 401 MSCS. Also, if you are interested in applying for a tutor position for Fall 2009, applications are available to apply in 401MSCS. Deadline for applications to be considered for employment with the MLRC is July 6, 2009. Thank you, Math 401 MSCS

Survey on a short course

Short course on Mathematical, Statistical, and Computational Tools for Studying Biological Systems We are writing a proposal to NIH for a summer short course which is tentatively scheduled on 5/16/2010 ~ 5/29/2010 (2 weeks) at Stillwater, OSU. Registration is FREE! In addition, if the program gets funded, participants in this short course will have the chance to receive travel/lodging scholarships ($300~$500) based on need. The goal of this short course is to prepare researchers at all professional levels for multidisciplinary research on complex biological systems and phenotypes by improving integration of mathematical, statistical, and computational approaches into biological research. Specifically, this short course will (a) introduce biology majors the concepts, models, and software in mathematics, statistics, and computer science that are commonly used in solving biological problems; (b) introduce statistics, mathematics, and computer science majors the basic concepts, research problems, and examples of mathematical/statistical applications in biology. We will also invite experts active in these fields to give seminar talks. This course is suitable for all levels of audiences (undergraduate, graduate, post-doc, faculty, etc) including new comers to these fields. By completing this short course, participants who are biology majors should be able to learn new approaches, become familiar with software, and understand the assumptions, advantages, and limitations of these approaches. Participants who are mathematics/statistics/computer science majors could benefit from training in the goals, nature, issues, and language of biological research and learn new ideas on how to apply their skills and knowledge to contemporary biological research. This short course will provide a great training opportunity for all the participants in the sense of building skills necessary for the job market as well as for future collaborative research.
