The Math Club's next meeting is this Wednesday, October 22, from 7-8 pm in MSCS 101. We'll watch the short animated film Flatland: A Journey of Several Dimensions starring the voices of Martin Sheen, Michael York, Kristen Bell and others. It is about a being who lives in a two-dimensional universe and his journey of discovering the third dimension. All are welcome. We will show the short animated film (about 35 minutes long) Flatland: A Journey of Many Dimensions starring the voice talents of Martin Sheen, Michael York, Kristen Bell, and others, and we will talk about the film's implications for our understanding of higher dimensions. Putnam Competition practice seminar.

Dear friends: The Putnam competition is an undergraduate math problem solving competition that has been held every year since 1938. It consists of 12 extremely challenging problems prepared by a rotating committee of mathematicians. Solving any one is an excellent result. Solving more than one is usually exceptional. I am starting up the Putnam information and practice seminar again this fall, ahich anyone is welcome to attend any time. It will be Tuesdays from 5 to 6 PM. The schedule in the math department is pretty tight this fall, and so I am sorry that this is the only time we can run this seminar. The actual competition is on Saturday December 6, so it is a little bit of a pain that finals being on Dec. 8, but there you go. It is not strictly necessary, but if you think you might participate in the competition this year, please let me know. For our last meeting of the Math Club, Dr. Doug Aichele will speak about Alaska's Iditarod: The Last Great Race on Earth, a race he viewed on his recent visit in conjunction with research on Alaskan sled dogs. The meeting will be on Tuesday, April 8, at 6:30 PM in MSCS 101. New officers will be elected, and pizza will be served. Anyone wishing to run for office may do so, but they should see me or email me beforehand if possible.
