Dear friends: One of our postodctoral visiting assistant professors Jonathan Johnson will favor us with the colloquium tomorrow at 3:30 PM in MSCS 514 (fifth floor). Title: The MMPDE moving mesh method and applications Sincerely, David Wright Keeping Things in Order, Jonathan Johnson Abstract: In the past couple of decades, group orderability has played a surprising role in the study of 3-manifolds. In this talk, we will focus on two key questions. When can the elements of a group be bi-ordered; that is, when is there a total ordering of a group’s elements invariant under group multiplication? Second, when does an automorphism of a group preserve a bi-ordering of the group? In particular, we will explore these questions for the fundamental groups of exteriors of links in the 3-sphere.

Dear friends: There is colloquium talk this Friday, Nov. 4, at 3:30 PM in MSCS 101. Prof. Xiaoming Zheng of Central Michigan University Title: Tumor Grows to Lower Extracellular Matrix Conductivity Regions under Darcy’s Law and Steady Morphology The abstract is below. There will be refreshments at 4:30 in the department lounge, and we will take the speaker to afterwards, and anyone who wishes to come along is welcome. Sincerely, David Wright Abstract: We study a classic Darcy’s law model for tumor cell motion with inhomogeneous and isotropic conductivity. The tumor cells are assumed to be a constant density fluid flowing through porous extracellular matrix (ECM). The ECM is assumed to be rigid and motionless with constant porosity. One and two dimensional simulations show that the tumor mass grows from high to low conductivity regions when the tumor morphology is steady. In the one-dimensional case, we proved that when the tumor size is steady, the tumor grows towards lower conductivity regions. We conclude that this phenomenon is produced by the coupling of a special inward flow pattern in the steady tumor and Darcy’s law which gives faster flow speed in higher conductivity regions.

Special Math Talks this week

Dear friends: This week thanks to the Association of Women in Mathematics (and the efforts of Neil Hoffman and Alessandra Costantini) we have special talks by Professor Ju-Lee Kim of the Masschusetts Institute of Technology. Professor Kim is a leader in representation theory and automorphic forms. She will be giving a number theory seminar Local Langlands correspondence and (stable) Bernstein center on Thursday at 3:30 PM in MSCS 514 aimed at grad students and faculty and she will be giving a colloquium Types in representation theory of p-adic groups on Friday at 3:30 PM in MSCS 101 aimed at a genral math audience. As an introduction to Professor Kim's are of study, our own Professor Melissa Emory will give a special talk The Langlands Program: A Grand Unified Theory on Tuesday, Oct. 25, at 3:30 PM in MSCS 514. The Langlands Program is a vast system of conjectures (and now some theorems) in group theory, number theory, rpresentation theory and many related field put forth by Robert Langlands in the 1960's and 1970's. Other opportunities to interact with Professor Kim during the week will be announced later. I hope you have a chance to take part in these talks. Sincerely, David Wright

Speaker Paul Dawkins, Texas State University Title: A Research-based approach to the teaching and learning of logic for the purposes of learning mathematical proving Abstract below: Hope to see you there David Wright Abstract: Based on eight years of teaching experiments both in laboratory and whole-class settings, we (Dr. Kyeong Hah Roh and I) have developed a novel approach to teaching logic for introduction to proof courses. We proceed from constructing property-based set relationships, to a theory of statements rooted in set-theory, to basic proof structures (direct, contrapositive, and biconditional). By focusing on sets throughout, we maintain students’ fundamental intuition that statements and proofs refer to objects, not to mere truth values. By comparing and contrasting statements and proofs, we build the logical structures on students’ existing reading competencies. By always beginning with sets of objects unified by some property, we support students in connecting logic and proof to mathematical inferences. While the theory we develop is compatible with the standard theory of logic in most introduction to proof textbooks, we argue that these unique features of our instructional sequence allow us to build on students’ existing ways of reasoning and to connect logic more directly to the proof-based activities they exist to support. Abstract of Dr. Segerman's talks: Mathematical dice design Robert Fathauer and I started making injection molded dice as "the dice lab" in 2014, and have since produced over 30 different dice designs. I'll talk about the mathematical, functional, and aesthetic aspects of our work. Variants of the 15-puzzle and the effects of holonomy I'll discuss some variants of the classic sliding tile "15 puzzle" that involve holonomy - the phenomenon of traveling around a loop in a curved surface and coming back rotated. I'll demonstrate physical puzzle designs with positive and with negative curvature, and discuss design considerations and consequences.
