Special Talks by Professor Joe Silverman this week

Dear all: I would like to contribute another reminder to everyone of the special talks this week by visiting Distinguished Professor Joe Silverman from Brown University. Anyone who is interested may attend any of them. Dr. Silverman has literally written the book on each talk. Wednesday 11/3 at 5:30 PM there is a Math talk in MSCS 101. "Taxicabs and Sums of Two Cubes: An excursion in Number Theory": This is an introductory talk by Professor Silverman (who authored a very popular undergraduate textbook "A Friendly Introduction to Number Theory") on a interesting story in elementary number theory involving Ramanujan and Dr. Silverman's own contributions much later. Thursday, 11/4 at 1:45 PM in MSCS 405/428. Number Theory Seminar: "Points of small height on elliptic curves and abelian surfaces" This will be a research-level seminar in Dr. Silverman's specialization in number theory. Dr. Silverman is the author of one of the most widely used textbooks "The Arithmetic of Elliptic Curves" on the number theory of elliptic curves, a subject which was the background for Andrew Wiles' famous proof of Fermat's Last Theorem. To be honest, you might need to have read a bunch of that before undertaking such a seminar. Dr. Silverman is a world-class speaker, but a seminar is at a pretty high level. Finally, the feature talk this week is a general audience colloquium on Friday, November 5, 3:30 PM, in SSH 035, followed by the reception in SSH 130 (the parlor area) (the building formerly called Murray Hall). "How Quantum Computers Will Kill Bitcoin and Break the Internet, and What We Can Do About It" Dr. Silverman is a co-author (with Hoffstein and Pipher) of the textbook "An Intro to Mathematical Cryptography" as well as founder of the crypto company NTRU Cryptosystems (now part of Security Innovation) which created the NTRU cyptosystem which is being studied as a potentially secure system in the event of the creation of the first real quantum computer (which will render many current cryptosystems insecure). If you are interested in crypto (or the future of the world), you may find this talk very interesting from a leader in the field. There are some times this week, where Dr. Silverman will be available in the colloquium visitor's office MS 407: 10AM Wednesday and Thursday. In addition, there is a special talk at 11AM on Thursday morning in the "virtual number theory seminar" https://www.ntwebseminar.org/ by one of Dr. Silverman's former students Dr. Kate Stange, professor of Math at the University of Colorado. That can be watched over the internet provided you register for the seminar at the above link. Drs. Putnam competition solicitation

Dear Students, The registration for the Putnam competition is just around the corner, October 15th, and I wanted to see how many of you are interested in participating. If you have no idea what the Putnam competition is about, you can visit https://www.maa.org/math-competitions/putnam-competition for more information. In brief, this is a one-day event during which you solve a total of 12 challenging problems(10pts each) during two 3 hours sessions – one in the morning and one in the afternoon. You work alone on all problems. During the break (at lunch) we will all go to Hideaway and have pizza on the house (yeah, the Department of Mathematics will cover it). Some of the problems are really challenging so you can just do your best. The same thing you do on all your exams, I assume. You can check https://www.maa.org/sites/default/files/AnnouncementOfWinners2018.pdf (see page 4) to see that a lot of students cannot solve any of the problems which is just fine. However, solving just two problems completely puts you in the top 600 in the nation. As you already know, solving 2 out of 12 problems on a university exam will not bring you any recognition so you can give it a try and see what happens. The competition will take place on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2019. The rules are quite simple: Undergraduate students must participate through their college or university in which they are regularly enrolled. Those who already hold a bachelor’s degree are ineligible. No individual may participate in the competition more than four times. If you are interested, let me know at dosev(a)okstate.edu so I can plan accordingly. They are looking for students with a serious interest in the actuarial profession who have a strong background in math/finance. Putnam Exam

Dear Students, I am writing to invite you to participate this year in the Putnam Exam, an all-day, nationwide collegiate math competition that takes place on December 1, the first Saturday in December, from 9:00 am - 12:00 noon and 2:00-5:00 pm. The math department will provide you with lunch. This competition is difficult, but the problems often catch your interest and draw you into trying to solve them. Dr. Wright created a handout with a few Putnam problems, attached. If you'd like to participate, we'd love to hear from you. Our registration is due shortly. If a few students are interested, we can hold a few practice sessions a bit later in the term. Let me, Dr. Dosev, or Dr. Wright know.
