Math Club!

Hello, Let me begin by apologizing if you are not supposed to be receiving this email! We are working on getting your contact off of this list, but sadly, it's not in my control. Anyway, The first math club meeting will be Tuesday, January 24th at 5pm in MSCS 101. We will be learning about puzzles that make you smarter like KenKen™ and double Sudoku as presented by Dr. Mantini. As always, there will be Pizza and soda provided. If you haven't paid dues, now would be a great time to pay. It's only $5 a year and goes towards eating pizza and other fun funding. :) If you are a student who has completed Calc 1 and 2 and two courses requiring Calc 2 as a prerequisite (i.e. Calc 3 and Differential Equations, usually) then you are eligible to join our national honors society. It's $25 for a lifetime and it looks good on resumes AND you can wear our cords when you walk at graduation. Hope to see you all there, Tyler

Department Head Interview

We will be interviewing Dr. William Jaco for the position of permanent Department Head on Thursday, December 1. We have set aside times for meetings with graduate and undergraduate students: Thursday, December 1, 1:00 - 1:30 PM: Meeting with graduate students, MS 514 Thursday, December 1, 1:30 - 2:00 PM: Meeting with undergraduate students, MS 514 All students are invited to attend one or the other of these meetings. Afterwards you will be provided with a form on which to provide feedback to the Head Search Committee on the candidate. Differential Geometry Course

Math Majors, In the Spring semester Differential Geometry (MATH 5413) will be offered. Differential Geometry is the study of surfaces (curvature, geodesics, etc). It is also the basis for the study of relativity. The prerequisites are minimal (either MATH 4013 or MATH 4143). This is a great opportunity, since the course is not offered too often. Also, this course will count in the major requirements under the 'General' option (even though it is not explicitly listed on the degree sheet). Here is the catologue description: *MATH 5413 Differential Geometry.* Prerequisite(s): 4013 or 4143 or 5043. Differential manifolds, vector fields, differential forms, connections, Riemannian metrics, geodesics, completeness, curvature, and related topics.
