Alumni profile: Jordan Sanders
Jordan graduated with a BS in pure mathematics in 2004. She is now pursuing a Masters in Petroleum Engineering while continuing to work. Here is what Jordan said when asked about how her OSU experience has helped her:
Say a few words about your current job.I am an engineering technician in the oil/gas exploration industry. I assist the petroleum engineers with whatever needs they might have. This includes data collection and manipulation, database management, PLENTY of work with Microsoft Excel and Access, running economics to decide whether decisions will be profitable and MUCH MUCH more.
How do the things that you learned as a math major help you do this job?My BS in Math truly taught me how to be an efficient, logical problem solver. Also because of proof theory classes, I feel that I am able to effective explain and defend (if needed) the decisions that I've made to perform my work. And whether it be in this job or any other job, earning a degree as a math major made me realize "I CAN DO IT"! The engineers that I work with think that their degree was difficult, but little do they realize the work it takes in earning a math degree!!!!!!
What classes or activities related to the math major have ended up being the most useful after you graduated? For this job, some of the most useful classes actually came from my elective classes. When I received my degree, I was afforded a few more elective hours than what is offered now. I was able to get a minor in Management Information Systems. I think pairing a math degree with a business minor creates a very well rounded student and future job applicant.
