Math Colloquium today

Hello: There is a math colloquium today: Speaker: Yudong Cao, Chief Technology Office and Co-Founder of Zapata Computing Title: Quantum-enahnced machine learning and optimization The abstract is below. This talk is via Zoom but it will be shown on the projector in MSCS 101 at 3:30 PM. The Zoom link is https://okstate-edu.zoom.us/j/96799414512 Since this is virtual, there will be some refreshments before the talk in the department 4th floor lounge at 3PM, instead of afterwards. Please join us either online or in MSCS 101 David Wright Abstract: I will introduce the subject of quantum computing, followed by discussions on how it can be applied to machine learning and optimization. We have done experiments in the past years on quantum devices for enhancing machine learning applications, especially generative modeling capabilities. I will also discuss the significance role of tensor networks, a highly related area to quantum, in our quest for quantum advantage.

Dear friends: Tomorrow (Friday, April 14) there will be a math colloquium at 3:30 PM in MSCS 101: Speaker: Qing Han, Notre Dame University Title: Regularity of singular solutions of differential equations Abstract is below. Refreshments will follow at 4:30 in the department fourth floor lounge. Next week the final spring colloquium will be Friday, April 21st: Dr. Yudong Cao, CTO and cofounder of Zapata Computing Title: Quantum-enhanced machine learning and optimization This will be a virtual talk on zoom (details to be communicated later) but you can also come to MSCS 101 at 3:30 PM where we will have a community viewing. On Friday April 28th, in place of a colloquium we will have the Department Awards Meeting in the French Lounge of the Student Union, where we will recognize our students' successes. On Friday May 5th, we will have the Math Department Student Research Poster Session at the MLSC. Please come join us, David Wright Math Colloquium Friday, April 14, 3:30 PM, MSCS 101 Speaker: Qing Han, Notre Dame University Title: Regularity of singular solutions of differential equations Abstract: In many important geometric differential equations, solutions are not necessarily regular. When singularity occurs, we still intend to explore whether solutions possess regularity of a certain degree. The structure of the singular sets, where solutions become singular, plays an important role. In this talk, we focus on one case. The singular sets are isolated. To study the regularity of solutions near the singular sets, we investigate asymptotic expansions of solutions. The talk is intended for a general audience.

Hope to see you there, David Wright Abstract: In this talk, we discuss gradient estimates for a class of divergence form elliptic equations with piecewise smooth coefficients. Such equations arise from the study of composite materials. The novelty of these estimates is that, even though they depend on the shape and on the size of the surfaces of discontinuity of the coefficients, they are independent of the distance between these surfaces. The talk is intended for a general audience.

Hope to see you there, David Wright Abstract: The study of roots of random polynomials is an active area of research that has been ongoing since the early 1900s. In this talk, we will survey some recent developments, focusing on robust frameworks to establish various universality properties. These include the local correlation of roots, the variance of the number of real roots, concentration phenomenon, and CLT fluctuation of the number of real roots. The talk is partly based on joint works with Y. Do, D. Lubinsky, O. Nguyen, I. Pritsker, and V. Vu.

Hi: We have a colloquium today from C. Douglas Haessig, University of Arizona at 3:30 PM in MSCS 101 Title: Families of exponential sums over finite fields ==== Abstract: The now proven Weil conjectures had a profound influence on number theory and algebraic geometry in the last century. The first of the conjectures was proven by Dwork in 1960 using an ingenious application of exponential sums and p-adic analysis. Exponential sums lie at the heart of many proofs in number theory, such as one of Gauss’ proofs of quadratic reciprocity. In the years following Dwork’s proof, it became apparent that studying families of exponential sums yielded further insights. The speaker is Jennifer Hom, from Georgia Institute of Technology: Title: Unknotting number and satellites Abstract below. Please come join us. Sincerely, David Wright Abstract: The unknotting number of a knot is the minimum number of crossing changes needed to untie the knot. It is one of the simplest knot invariants to define, yet remains notoriously difficult to compute. We will survey some basic knot theory invariants and constructions, including the satellite knot construction, a straightforward way to build new families of knots. We will give a lower bound on the unknotting number of certain satellites using knot Floer homology. This is joint work with Tye Lidman and JungHwan Park.

Hello everyone, The mathematics department will be hosting Jennifer Hom as our Distinguished Women in Mathematics Colloquium speaker. A full announcement on that will be sent out on Monday. In preparation for her visit, our own Jonathan Johnson will be giving a warm-up talk at 3:30 pm in MSCS 114 today: Title: Unknotting Numbers and Knot Floer Homology Abstract: The unknotting number is a very natural and classical invariant of a knot. Despite this, this invariant is not well understood. For example, it is an open question how unknotting numbers behave under basic knot operations such as the connect sum and satellite operations. Floer homology has provide a suite of new invariants for 3-maifolds which has provided new techniques to study classical problems in knot theory. In preparation for next week's colloquium talk by Jennifer Hom, we will define knot Floer homology and discuss how it has been used to study unknotting numbers.
