Join the Math Club!
We're glad that you are interested in joining the Math Club. Being a member of
the Math Club provides you with many benefits including the company of other
students who like Math. At Math Club meetings you'll play
some fun games, hear interesting talks, and get
information on careers and other opportunities for Math students. Math
Club members also have the
opportunity to join two prominent national professional societies,
Pi Mu Epsilon
and the Mathematical Association of America.
To join the Math Club, fill out our
Membership form and return it along
with your dues to the President, Treasurer, or to the Faculty
Advisors, Dr. Mantini in MS 410 or Dr. Mermin in MS 414.
Membership in the Math Club is open to any member of the
OSU community. Local chapter dues are just $10 per year which may
be paid in cash or by check made payable to Pi Mu Epsilon.
This fee helps pay for Math Club expenses and refreshments for the meetings.
Pi Mu Epsilon, our first national affiliate, is the
National Honorary Mathematics Society.
Members are entitled to list honorary society membership on their resumes and to wear
gold and purple honor cords with their cap and gown at graduation.
Membership in national Pi Mu Epsilon is open to:
- Undergraduates who
- Have completed two semesters of Calculus and two additional Math courses with a Calculus prerequisite;
- Maintain a Math GPA of 3.0 or better (courses at the level of Calculus
and above);
- Have a Graduation GPA of 3.0 or better.
- Graduate students with the equivalent of an undergraduate Math
degree and whose Math GPA for the past year is 3.0 or better.
- Faculty members in Mathematics or related subjects.
National dues for Pi Mu Epsilon are $20, payable once per lifetime, which
includes a one-year subscription to the
Pi Mu Epsilon Journal.
Members of Pi Mu Epsilon are entitled to speak at
national and
regional conferences, for which there is some travel support.
Some items
available for purchase for members of Pi Mu Epsilon are
a gold key pin ($20), a white T-shirt ($10), or
the gold and purple honor cords which are worn
over the shoulders with the cap and gown at graduation ($12).
The Mathematical Association of America,
our second affiliate,
is the largest professional society that focuses on mathematics accessible
at the undergraduate level.
Membership is open to anyone with an interest in Mathematics.
For 2009-2010, members in OSU's Math Club may join the MAA for $35.
This includes subscriptions to the excellent undergraduate journal
Math Horizons,
the MAA's Newsletter FOCUS,
and membership in the Oklahoma-Arkansas section of the MAA.
Other subscriptions are available
for $37 each for student chapter members to the MAA's slightly more
advanced journals
Mathematics Magazine or
The College Math Journal,
and for $57 to the MAa's premier journal
The American Mathematical Monthly.
The MAA also sells some merchandise members might like, including an
icosahedron stress reliever (the MAA's famous logo),
frisbee,
MAA ball cap,
MAA playing cards,
and an
MAA tote bag.
To join OSU's Math Club and either of our national affiliates, if desired,
simply fill out this form and return it along
with your payment to Dr. Mantini's Office (MS 410) or bring it to our next
Math Club meeting.
