Pi Mu Epsilon
Pi Mu Epsilon
is an honorary national mathematics society, founded in 1914,
dedicated to the promotion of mathematics and recognition of students
who successfully pursue mathematical understanding. It sponsors an
annual
national conference in conjunction with the MAA's Mathfest every summer,
where students may present
short talks on mathematical subjects and hear some of the country's best
mathematicians and computer scientists speak. Travel support is
available for speakers or for a delegate from the chapter,
and there are prizes for the best undergraduate talks.
Pi Mu Epsilon also sponsors many similar
regional conferences.
It publishes a journal
accessible to undergraduates in mathematics called the
Pi Mu Epsilon Journal.
This can be a great place to publish a Senior Honors Thesis or a paper
about whatever independent research you've been doing or problems you've
been solving. The Journal includes problems and their solutions; see
The Problem Department's
Page for a list of problems still to be solved.
Pi Mu Epsilon also sponsors a program of national speakers who are willing
to visit local chapters. Small grants are available to local chapters
who wish to sponsor math competitions or meetings bringing together
chapters from different universities in the region.
Membership in Pi Mu Epsilon is open to
- Undergraduates who
- Have completed two semesters of Calculus and two additional Math courses with a Calculus prerequisite;
- Maintain a Math GPA of 3.0 or better (courses at the level of Calculus
and above);
- Have a Graduation GPA of 3.0 or better.
- Graduate students with the equivalent of an undergraduate Math
degree and whose Math GPA for the past year is 3.0 or better.
- Faculty members in Mathematics or related subjects.
National dues for Pi Mu Epsilon are payable once per lifetime
and include a one-year subscription to the
Pi Mu Epsilon Journal.
Additional
merchandise is available for members to buy, including a nice T-shirt with
the PME logo as a tiling on the back, a gold key pin, and a set of
Honor Cords that members are entitled to wear with their cap and gown at
graduation. Cool!
You can print out the
application form
here or pick up one in MSCS 401, fill it out, and bring it
together with your check to Dr. Mantini in MSCS 410.
